Portland Vase
Described by Josiah Wedgwood as his ‘greatest achievement’, it took 5 years and thousands of tests to recreate the 1st century BC cameo glass vase. Recreating beautiful forms is a recurring thread in ceramic traditions and Laura is intrigued by the way forms are interpreted and updated through history. Stripping away the cameo decoration, to create a more elegant, contemporary Portland Vase. Thrown in coloured porcelain, each piece is carefully turned to reveal the precise shape, the crisp edges, adding a sense of drama. The looped handles are carefully manipulated and perfected before joining to the piece giving each Portland vase has its own character.
